Megaworld Global Hotels & Resorts Marks 3rd Sampaguita Advocacy Anniversary, Expands Sustainable Hospitality Initiatives | MGHR strengthens community engagement, cultural preservation, and social impact through sampaguita-inspired hotel experiences, volunteer planting activities, and partnerships supporting local communities.
Megaworld Global Hotels & Resorts (MGHR) is strengthening its commitment to responsible hospitality by integrating sustainability, Filipino cultural preservation, and community engagement into its hotel operations, creating meaningful opportunities for travelers to support local communities and contribute to social initiatives during their stays.

As the hotel group celebrates the third anniversary of its Sampaguita advocacy, MGHR recognizes the growing participation of guests, volunteers, and partner organizations in efforts to revive the cultural significance of the country’s national flower and preserve its legacy for future generations.
“Travelers are becoming more conscious of what their choices support, and hospitality must respond. For us, mindful travel is no longer optional. We want every guest, in every hotel, to have the opportunity to participate in something meaningful. Sustainability must become a standard mindset across how we conceptualize and execute our operations, not simply an occasional activity. Our responsibility is to make it easier for people to care and act on that concern,” said Socrates “Sonny” Alvaro, Managing Director of Megaworld Global Hotels & Resorts.
The initiative reflects evolving travel preferences, with sustainability and community impact increasingly influencing tourism decisions. According to Booking.com’s 2025 Travel & Sustainability Report, 73% of surveyed travelers want their spending to benefit local communities, 69% hope to leave destinations better than they found them, and 77% seek authentic experiences representative of local culture.
Reviving the Sampaguita as a Symbol of Filipino Hospitality
Once central to a flourishing flower trade and deeply embedded in Filipino traditions, the sampaguita has long been associated with religious offerings, welcome garlands, celebrations, and everyday expressions of affection and respect.
However, declining cultivation, changing land use, and evolving lifestyles have challenged the livelihood opportunities and cultural traditions surrounding the country’s national flower.
MGHR’s Sampaguita advocacy seeks to restore the flower’s relevance by giving it greater visibility, new applications, and a meaningful place in contemporary Filipino hospitality.
Launched in August 2023 in support of the Department of Tourism’s Filipinization efforts, the initiative promotes the sampaguita as a recognizable Philippine cultural icon embodying love, honor, dignity, and healing.
The flower’s cultural appeal continues to find new expressions, including sampaguita-inspired Nike apparel and accessories associated with Filipina tennis star Alex Eala, bringing the familiar Filipino symbol to the international sporting stage.
Sampaguita-Inspired Stays Generate Growing Guest Participation
MGHR’s Sampaguita Room Package has generated a total of 4,878 room nights over the past three years, demonstrating growing interest in hospitality experiences connected to Filipino culture and meaningful causes.
In 2026, the package recorded 1,582 room nights, representing a 25% increase in room production compared with 2025, highlighting continued interest in culturally inspired stays with a broader social purpose.
Beyond hotel accommodations, the advocacy has mobilized hundreds of volunteers through more than 40 sampaguita planting activities, generating thousands of minutes of collective community service.

Planting engagements have reached communities across Boracay, Cebu, Iloilo, Cavite, Batangas, Bulacan, and Laguna, bringing together local government units, tourism stakeholders, residents, educators, students, hospitality professionals, and civic organizations.
Among its collaborators are the University of the Philippines Asian Institute of Tourism, Global-Estate Resorts, Inc., Rotary Club of Biñan, and the Local Government Unit of Lapu-Lapu, alongside other community partners.
Through these collective efforts, the initiative has helped plant more than 7,000 sampaguita seedlings, demonstrating how community participation can support cultural preservation and environmental awareness.
Sampaguita Park and Community Partnerships Expand Social Impact
One of the advocacy’s significant milestones is the establishment of the 4,300-square-meter Sampaguita Park in Southwoods City, Biñan, Laguna, providing a dedicated space for cultivation, cultural preservation, and potential livelihood opportunities connected to the national flower.

MGHR has also extended its community support beyond environmental and cultural initiatives through its partnership with Dwellwellbeing, helping provide more than 10,000 meals to beneficiaries of Project PEARLS, a nonprofit organization supporting underserved communities.
These initiatives demonstrate how hospitality-driven partnerships can create opportunities for social action beyond hotel operations, connecting cultural heritage, environmental stewardship, and community welfare.
MGHR Invites More Travelers and Communities to Join the Advocacy
As the Sampaguita advocacy enters its fourth year, MGHR continues to encourage participation through sampaguita-inspired hotel stays, seedling sponsorships, community planting activities, and partnerships with schools and educational institutions.
The milestone highlights the growing role of guests, local communities, volunteers, and partner organizations in advancing a shared commitment to Filipino heritage and responsible tourism.
For MGHR, the initiative underscores how hospitality can become a platform for meaningful connections, allowing travelers to contribute to causes that benefit destinations and communities.
While a hotel stay may last only a few nights, the positive impact it inspires can continue long after checkout—through communities nurturing seedlings, students discovering their cultural heritage, and future generations finding renewed appreciation for the sampaguita, the Philippines’ national flower.
By bringing together tourism, sustainability, and cultural identity, Megaworld Global Hotels & Resorts continues to demonstrate how responsible hospitality can create lasting value beyond the guest experience.
